COMFORT (4 Letters )
Many years ago, I preached a sermon on Moses and the Exodus. A focus of that sermon was 4 letters: YHWH. Scholars often refer to these 4 letters (consonants) as The Tetragrammaton. The word Tetragrammaton is actually a fancy way of saying, well…4 letters. But, to be sure, these 4 letters are not just any 4 letters. These 4 letters are written in the imperfect tense and are meant to convey the very essence of God to his people. Moreover, God says the following to Moses:
“This is My name for ever, and this is My memorial unto all generations.”
Now, you know the story. The Egyptians oppressed the Israelites. The Israelites called out to God for a deliverer. That deliver came in the form of Moses, a type of Christ. Moses, after killing a man, flees Pharaoh and eventually ends up on a mountain speaking to a burning bush. Recently, in reading this account, I started to think about why we seek God and how God relates to us as his children. I broke it down to what I call the 3 Cs: Comfort, Confirm, and Continuity.
In this post, we’ll just deal with comfort. We’ll look at the other 2 Cs in future posts. Let’s first define the word comfort before we go any further. According to Merriam-Webster, the word comfort is defined in the following manner:
1: to give strength and hope to
2: to ease the grief or trouble of
As believers, we have a special relationship with God and should act accordingly. He has taken the time and effort to reveal Himself to us. The 4 letters that God reveals to Moses is a revelation of who He is. What’s more, it’s an indication of what He is to His people.
As I mentioned earlier, the 4 letters are in the imperfect tense. What this means is that in the Hebrew language, YHWH means more than simply I Am. It can be interpreted as I Am That I Am, I Am Who I Will Be, I Will Be That I Am, I Am What I Was, I Will Be What I Was, etc. How exciting for us as children of the one God that He can be whatever we need! Everyday, as we go through our lives, we should take comfort in that fact.
God has taken the time to reveal Himself to his children in many ways throughout millennia. He even took the time to send His only begotten son to us that we might be delivered from our sins and know Him better. Shouldn’t we also take the time to approach God and reveal ourselves? The best relationships are a two way street. In Revelation 3:20, Christ says the following:
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
Open your hearts. Trust in Him and he will set you free. Let go of your fears and worries. He’s seen and heard it all before. You can’t shock or surprise Him. Let Him who is able to do all things provide you with strength and ease your troubles. Be blessed and be well.
